Doing Away with Working from Home Blues

Working from home is not as easy as most people think. Sure enough, you do not have to commute just to get to your place of work. All you need to do is go to another room in your house and close the door. But working from home has its own special challenges. These are challenges that people who have opted to work from home need to face every single day.

The main challenge that working from home poses is the fact that you would be on your own. You do not have a boss or officemates to look over your shoulder every so often. Your time is also your own and you can choose to work at any time when you want to work.

It takes discipline to be your own boss and manage your own time when you are working from home. You would need to exert this discipline because there are so many distractions that you can get at home. There are chores to be done, kids to be attended to, not to mention various sorts of home entertainment.

To help you become disciplined when you work from home and to avoid distractions, here are a few tips.

  1. Designate a specific work time. If you are used to working from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the office, you should impose the same work hours for yourself at home. This will get your mind into the right mindset needed to complete your work.

  1. Dress for work. It is so tempting to stay in your PJs when you work from home, but it does not help you get the right mindset for work. Thus, you should start your morning as you would have done if you were working outside the home. You do not have to wear a suit, though. Just dress yourself in a manner that speaks that you are in business at that time.

  1. Shut yourself in. If you have children or if your spouse is a stay-at-home person as well, they may tend to forget that just because you are at home, then they can bother you any time they want. Set your boundaries. Make them realise that when you are in your home office, dressed for work and all that, you are not to be disturbed unless truly necessary. Your computer is to be used only for your work, and not for their homework or their games. If you need to do chores, you can do them after your office hours.

Working from home is a pleasure. You just need to be disciplined enough to stay productive despite the temptations and distractions of home.
