How to Set Up Your Home Office If you plan to start working from home, setting up a home office is definitely something that you would want to consider. Many work-from-home experts agree that setting up a space that is dedicated to your work and cannot be invaded by the other members of your household is invaluable when you want to concentrate on getting your work done. But you do not have to be a work-from-home person just to consider having a home office. A home office is also useful if you do a lot of activities with your computer, such as shopping or banking on the Internet or playing online games. If you have children, having a space where they could study and do their homework in comfort and without distraction is a good reason to have a home office. However, as good as having a home office sounds like, how do you set up one? Consider the Space Before you go ahead and buy the furnishings and supplies that you would need for a home office, take a look at the space you would designate as your home office. Is it going to be an entire spare room? Or is it just a small corner of your den or kitchen, or a very small room? The size of the space you have allotted for your home office is your main consideration when you buy furnishings and equipment for it. If you have an entire room with a large area, then go ahead and invest on a writing desk, a separate workstation for your computer, printer, fax machine and other office equipment you will be getting, and a comfortable chair or two. Other furnishings you may consider having are bookshelves and filing cabinets. Your home office should be furnished so that you would be able to sit easily whilst you work and work in peace. If your space for the home office is quite small, a modular workstation will have to do. A modular workstation would be able to hold your computer and have space for you to write on. It would also provide storage for your supplies, shelving for your books and drawers for your files. Essential Equipment Just like any other office space, a home office would need equipment to function. The most important of these is a computer. If you do a lot of deskwork and you require a powerful computer, a desktop computer would be perfect for your needs. But a laptop may come in handy if you do a lot of travelling or if you like to keep busy whilst on the road. A modem would naturally be vital if you do your work through the Internet. The capacity for people to work from home nowadays comes mainly from the wide availability of the Internet. Do the other members of your household own computers situated outside of your home office? You could share your Internet connection by setting up a router. A printer is another piece of equipment that would come in handy for your home office. Most home office users prefer inkjet printers because of their versatility. However, home office users who wish to have a wide range of functionality for their home office buy multi-function printers that can perform the tasks of a flatbed scanner, a copying machine, a fax machine and a telephone. Speaking of telephones, you may want to have a phone unit installed in your home office as well. Other Supplies What else would you need to make your home office functional? Office supplies would be important to complete the functionality of your home office. Stationery, pens, copy paper, paper clips, staplers and staple wire, post-it notepads and such will be supplies you would need to keep stock of. A corkboard where you can post reminders and important notes would also worth having in your home office. |
